(MLB.com) The St. Louis Cardinals have placed right-hander Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.
The move was announced prior to Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies.
Left-hander John Gast has been recalled from Triple-A Memphis and will start on Tuesday against the New York Mets.
Westbrook is 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA in six starts. In a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, he allowed three earned runs over 5 1/3 innings.
"I don't think it is anything to be super alarmed about," Westbrook said. "It's inflamed right now. It's a precautionary type of DL stint. Hopefully, we'll knock it out."
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak indicated that the move ... [ More ]

(MLB.com) The St. Louis Cardinals found out what it's like to be on the other end of a pitching gem Sunday afternoon.
Left-hander Jorge De La Rosa allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings and Troy Tulowitzki ripped a three-run homer to lead the Rockies to an 8-2 win in front of 40,881 at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals, who had a three-game winning streak snapped, won the first two games of the series by 3-0 scores on masterful shutouts by Adam Wainwright and Shelby Miller. Wainwright gave up two hits. Miller surrendered one and struck out a career-high 13 batters.
But Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia was not able to keep the eye-popping run going. He gave up a season-high five earned runs on eight hits over ... [ More ]

(MLB.com) The best starting rotation in the Majors got even better Friday night.
Cardinals rookie Shelby Miller tossed a one-hitter in his first professional shutout and Carlos Beltran slammed his team-leading ninth home run of the season in a 3-0 win over the Rockies in front of 37,800 at Busch Stadium.
Miller allowed a leadoff single to Eric Young and then retired the next 27 hitters. He struck out a career-high 13 in improving to 5-2 with a 1.58 ERA. The right-hander has held the opposition to three or fewer runs in all seven starts this season.

(MLB.com) Capitalizing against a Cubs bullpen that has been nearly as unsettled as their own this season, the Cardinals escaped Wrigley Field with a split of the brief two-game series on Wednesday.
After dropping a one-run game on Tuesday, the Cardinals captured a come-from-behind 5-4 victory in front of an announced crowd of 26,354 the lowest attendance figure for a Cubs-Cardinals game at Wrigley Field since May 1998.
With the win, the Cardinals finished their six-game road trip with five wins. The club leads the Majors with 14 road victories this season.
Jon Jay, whose .529 average on this road trip earned him a bump up in the batting order, delivered the go-ahead RBI hit in the eighth with a sharp single to ... [ More ]

Cards, Lynn see streaks end in loss to Cubs
Tuesday, May 7th 2013
AP
 |
|
(MLB.com) A Cardinals club that bashed its way to 29 runs over a four-day span in Milwaukee couldn't sustain the offensive output on Tuesday night. Nate Schierholtz's two-run blast off Lance Lynn in the fourth trumped an earlier homer from Allen Craig and lifted the Cubs to a 2-1 win in front of 30,161 at Wrigley Field.
The loss snapped the Cardinals' six-game winning streak and ended their string of consecutive road wins at seven.
Craig, who remained homerless until his 30th game of the season, wasted little time picking up his second of the year. He delivered a solo shot off Chicago lefty Travis Wood to lead off the second. But Lynn, who entered the night averaging a National League-best seven runs of support, would get no ... [ More ]

Cardinals activate Adams from DL, option Curtis

(MLB.com) Power-hitting first baseman Matt Adams returned to the Cardinals' bench on Tuesday after a three-game rehab stint with Double-A Springfield (Mo.).
Adams stayed the minimum 15 days on the disabled list while recovering from a right oblique strain suffered while taking pregame swings on April 22. In order to clear space for Adams on the 25-man roster, the Cardinals optioned Jermaine Curtis to Triple-A.
"It's definitely good to have him back," manager Mike Matheny said. "I believe we addressed [the injury] before it got very bad, and he was able to keep in the rhythm of his good swing when he left. It's something to build on going forward, and we're excited to have him back."
Inclement weather condensed Adams' ... [ More ]

Motte's surgery deemed successful, necessary
Tuesday, May 7th 2013
AP

|
(MLB.com) Right-hander Jason Motte underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, a procedure that became a necessity after Motte continued to feel right elbow discomfort during the early stages of a throwing program.
The surgery, which typically carries a recovery time of 12 months, was performed by Dr. George Paletta at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. General manager John Mozeliak reported that Paletta was satisfied with the outcome of the procedure.
According to manager Mike Matheny, Paletta also confirmed that the ligament would never have properly healed without surgery. That was not something definitively known through reading the images of Motte's most recent MRI.
"There's always that little bit of doubt," Matheny ... [ More ]

(MLB.com) MILWAUKEE - The Cardinals have won most of the year behind a strong rotation. Against the Brewers on Sunday, and during the entire series at Miller Park, they showed how powerful they can be when firing on all cylinders.
Allen Craig's bases-loaded double scored all three runners to key a six-run second inning, and the Cardinals completed their first four-game sweep of Milwaukee with a 10-1 victory on Sunday.
"It's just a good time for everyone to get going," said Craig, who also tripled and went 8-for-19 in the series.
St. Louis has won six consecutive games and has beaten Milwaukee six of seven times this year, outscoring the Brewers 42-17. The team has won seven consecutive road games for the first time ... [ More ]
