(CBSSports.com) Cardinals lefthander Jaime Garcia will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, sources close to the situation told CBSSports.com
Dr. James Andrews recommended the surgery, confirming the original diagnosis of a small tear in his labrum. He is said to have what was described as a "30-40" percent tear, requiring surgery the Cardinals' team doctor will perform the operation.
Garcia, 26, is expected to return to the mound for the Cardinals next year.
Andrews is said to have expressed the opinion to Garcia that it's amazing he was able to pitch as well as he did considering the condition of his shoulder. Garcia was 5-2 with a 3.58 ERA before having to visit the doctors with shoulder pain.

Descalso's career game backs win for Wainwright
Wednesday, May 22nd 2013
AP
 |
|
(MLB.com) Daniel Descalso, after striking out in a critical ninth-inning spot on Saturday, insisted that his swing had been feeling better as of late. He simply hadn't had many opportunities to prove it.
But with David Freese needing another day to nurse a swollen right thumb, Descalso for only the fifth time this month found a place in the starting lineup on Tuesday night. He then proceeded to provide substance to his claim. Capping a three-hit game with an eighth-inning grand slam, Descalso drove in five and scored three times as the Cardinals pounded the Padres, 10-2.
"It's not easy at all," manager Mike Matheny said of Descalso's task to stay sharp without consistent at-bats. "But that's what most guys have to do at ... [ More ]

Miller again falls victim to high pitch count
Tuesday, May 21st 2013
AP
 |
|
(MLB.com) Shelby Miller worked himself out of a third-inning jam brilliantly, setting down the toughest part of San Diego's order all with the potential tying run on third. But it would be an escalating pitch count that would preclude Miller from getting the opportunity to work out of his next mess.
That troublesome spot came in the sixth, and Fernando Salas' inability to provide the necessary assist cost the Cardinals a series-opening win in San Diego. The two inherited runners to score off Salas pushed the Padres ahead and toward an eventual 4-2 victory in front of 18,763 at Petco Park on Monday.
Miller, who entered the start tied for the league lead with a 1.40 ERA, allowed a baserunner in each inning he pitched, though he ... [ More ]

Cards ride four-run fourth to take series from Brewers
Sunday, May 19th 2013
AP
 |
|
(MLB.com) Kyle Lohse's tenure in St. Louis ended after last season largely because the Cardinals believed their farm system had enough promising talent to cushion his departure. That talent not only pushed him out of town, but it has now outpitched him three times this season.
Once again picking on their former teammate, the Cardinals closed a 10-game homestand with a 4-2 win over the Brewers. Sunday's victory, the team's 13th in 17 games this month, came in front of an announced crowd of 39,878 at Busch Stadium and secured a series win for St. Louis.
Having been beaten twice earlier this year by rookie starter Shelby Miller, Lohse lost a matchup against rookie John Gast on Sunday. All of the Cardinals' scoring came during a ... [ More ]

Cards calling up Lyons to take Garcia's spot; Boggs back with team
Sunday, May 19th 2013
AP
 |
|
(STLToday.com) Manager Mike Matheny said before Sunday's game that the Cardinals would call up lefty Tyler Lyons from Memphis to take Jaime Garcia's spot in the rotation on Wednesday in San Diego.
He didn't say what the corresponding roster move would be, and the team doesn't have to make it until Wednesday morning.
Lyons is 2-1 with a 4.47 ERA at Memphis. He has 38 strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings.
Matheny said one of the reasons for choosing Lyons is that Wednesday would be his regular day to pitch.
"His day fell right on Jaime's day, for one," Matheny said. "Also, we we watched how he's been throwing and he's been doing a nice job and has earned an opportunity."
Matheny said that one of the reasons ... [ More ]

Cards unable to capitalize in extra-inning loss to Crew
Sunday, May 19th 2013
AP
 |
|
(MLB.com) After weeks of watching the starting rotation pick up a wobbly bullpen and underachieving offense, the Cardinals' starters have spent much of the last week as the beneficiaries of some payback assistance from both.
On Saturday, they simply didn't get enough.
After pitching four scoreless innings, a stingy St. Louis bullpen bent in the 10th. With a two-out, two-run single off Joe Kelly, Brewers infielder Jeff Bianchi lifted Milwaukee to a 6-4 win in front of an announced crowd of 42,410 at Busch Stadium. The tie-breaking hit came a half-inning after the Cardinals stranded the bases loaded.
"I didn't feel like I was getting whacked, just gave up some hits," Kelly said. "[I] got [the] ground balls I needed to. ... [ More ]

Shoulder strain sends Garcia to disabled list
Saturday, May 18th 2013
AP
 |
|
(MLB.com) A week after losing one member of its rotation to an arm injury, the Cardinals are now down another.
Jaime Garcia, who has been bothered by an increasing amount of shoulder discomfort over the past two weeks, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain. But unlike Jake Westbrook who is expected to only miss three starts as he recovers from an elbow injury Garcia is bracing for the possibility that his absence could be much longer.
Garcia will receive treatment recommendations from the Cardinals' medical staff, as well as Dr. James Andrews, who Garcia is scheduled to go see early next week. But because this injury is related to the same shoulder impingement that began bothering him 12 ... [ More ]

Scar tissue delays Westbrook's recovery
Friday, May 17th 2013
AP
 |
|
(MLB.com) Initially hopeful that elbow discomfort would sideline him for only two starts, Jake Westbrook is now bracing for a slightly longer-than-expected stay on the disabled list. Additional tests on Westbrook's right elbow this week revealed a build up of scar tissue, which required a second cortisone shot in the elbow.
The shot, which Westbrook had on Thursday, precludes him from throwing for two days. That meant Westbrook could not resume his throwing program on Friday as had been originally scheduled. Even if he can begin playing catch again on Sunday, the setback is likely enough to cost Westbrook a third start.
"The fact that I haven't thrown yet, it would probably be tough to gather enough arm strength up to make that ... [ More ]

Cards hold on vs. Brewers after Freese's grand slam
Friday, May 17th 2013
AP
 |
|
(MLB.com) David Freese entered Friday night's contest against the Milwaukee Brewers in a slump.
The Cardinals' third baseman was batting .209 with no home runs and just four RBIs. But in his first at-bat, he ripped off a 419-foot grand slam to center field, breaking a 112 at-bat homer drought that dated back to September 2012 while doubling his season RBI total.
Freese's grand slam highlighted a five-run first inning start as St. Louis continued its season dominance of the Milwaukee Brewers with a 7-6 victory in front of an announced 39,426 fans at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals' bats troubled Wily Peralta throughout, totaling 11 hits and six earned runs in five innings against the Brewers' starter.

Cards continue to struggle against lefty starters
Thursday, May 16th 2013
AP
 |
|
(MLB.com) Before a pitch was thrown on Thursday, the matchup hinted at an unbalanced affair. There was Adam Wainwright, on the heels of a two-hit shutout, set to face a Mets club that had won just twice in its past 10 games. Opposing him would be a pitcher who had been knocked around for 15 runs in his past two starts.
But things aren't always as they seem, and Jon Niese provided that reminder as he delivered one of his strongest starts of his season. It helped the Mets escape Busch Stadium with a 5-2 victory, foiling the Cardinals' attempt to sweep a four-game series for the second time this month.
"Anytime you head into a big league game, it's hard enough to win on its own, but to take four of them in a row is extremely ... [ More ]
